"... it is not the same city the one of books and the Internet, radio and television, theater and cinema, photograph and phonograph, magazines and newspapers. Or, more precisely, the cities which we live in are the combined result of the action and the human trajectories across their geographical spaces and the media interactions that traverse, constitute, coordinate, integrate and segment them, and also compare and differentiate one from another.
From certain scale on, it is impossible for an ordinary citizen to fully know, without the presence of the media, the space and activity of his city. Moreover, we have contact with cities we do not know and we feel we are in our city when we hear a radio program originated in it even though we might be surrounded by a rural landscape. In the media there also coexist the latest actuality and the most macerated tradition.
The spaces and times of the city are mainly the spaces and times of its media. Spaces and times that are complex, flaky, enigmatic, asphyxiating or the constructors of the cultural air we breathe.
We publish this magazine because we think it is politically necessary that an academic space that embodies this perspective shall exist, since the media develop an evident role in the political struggle. "(José Luis Fernández, Fragment of the Prologue LIS # 1)
