Pedestrian barriers in public space. The case study of three fenced neighborhood parks in San Nicolas de los Garza, Mexico
Abstract
Parks are public spaces for collective use that enable widespread access and free movement, parks function as organizing elements of the urban territory and can be linked with other public spaces. Accessibility to the parks is one aspect that greatly affects their use. This research seeks to understand the changes that have suffered three neighborhood parks within a period of approximately ten years. The three parks selected for this research were fenced in recent years and are in residential areas of the municipality of San Nicolas de los Garza in Mexico. This study seeks to assess the implications of this transformation in the connectivity of its pedestrian infrastructure and its relationship with the immediate environment. For this study, on-site observations were made and the compendium of historical photographs from the Google Street View tool was used to analyze the previous state of the parks and visualize the modifications that they have suffered from 2009 to date. Measurements and records of the configuration of the parks and their components were also made using Google Earth measurement tools. The images presented in this study demonstrate the existence of a pedestrian infrastructure that was erased by time. This research suggests that by bordering the contour of the parks, a barrier is created and separates it from the rest of its context, this also limits the possibilities of access and reduces its use as a connection space for pedestrians who pass through the area.Downloads
