Rules of manuscript submission for authors

Each journal number has a main theme (DOSSIER), which articulates the calling for presentation of the central articles; an open forum (ESPACIO ABIERTO) in which the contribution of articles of medium length or research notes will be accepted; an open section for the publication of interviews, comments and criticism, translations of original texts that are considered as substantial for urban studies, as well as books and articles reviews. Those reviews that in its content articulate two or three books or articles of recent edition (less than two years old) about a specific subject (URBANIDADEDES) will be especially welcomed. It will also have a dedicated space for bibliographical and research and extension activities updates, related to our usual themes (NOVEDADES).

ABOUT THE DOSSIER SECTION

In the DOSSIER section, only articles with a minimum extension of 6.000 words and a maximum of 8.000 words will be admitted, and this includes notes, bibliography, charts, etc.). The call for submission of the articles in this section is biannual: in the month of december of each year until march of the following year (for the even number that is published in december) and from july to october (for the odd number that is published in june). The received texts must comply with the theme selected for the call, and also be original and unpublished. These will be placed under the scrutiny of two external evaluators.

ABOUT THE ESPACIO ABIERTO SECTION

Those articles to be presented in this section will be open-themed, within the field of study of this journal. The call for these articles ins permanent. Only articles with a minimum extension of 6.000 words and a maximum of 8.000 words will be admitted (including notes, bibliography, maps, charts, etc). They must be original, unpublished and will be place under review of at least two external evaluators.

ABOUT THE URBANIDADES SECTION (book and articles reviews, and more)

The articles contained in the URBANIDADES [URBANITIES] section verse about book reviews, articles, other subjects and more. The call for these articles ins permanent. The articles must have a maximum extension of 4000 (four thousand) words. Those reviews which articulate various texts will be highly valued.

ABOUT NOVEDADES SECTION [NOVELTIES]

These articles verse about summaries of ongoing or concluded scientific research, summaries of approved Masters or Doctorate theses, and reports about projects or academic extension activities, none older than five years. Calling for these articles is permanent, meaning that throughout the whole year we receive contributions for this section. The texts will have a maximum extension of 1500 (one thousand five hundred) words and those reviews that are recent in nature will be of special value.

These summaries should contain: research title, keywords (between 3 and 6), director, institution, start and conclusion date (for research), and approval (for theses), subject, problem, objectives, research methodology and main results, and e-mail address for consultations about the related research.

Article selection criteria

Regarding received manuscripts, a first selection will be made by the editorial committee, which will evaluate pertinence and quality. The committee will announce, within the maximum period of one month, the rejection of those articles that in their consideration do not meet the necessary criteria.

Once this first screening has passed, those articles will be submitted to a minimum of two external evaluators, who are experts in their fields, under a double blind system. If those reviews should not coincide, a third evaluator will receive the material for review. Once the editorial committee has received all the evaluations, it will issue a report that will be communicated to the author. The conclusion can be accepted, accepted with suggestions, accepted with substantial modifications or be rejected. In all cases, the decisions made by the committee are final.

Only original and unpublished works either in Spanish or Portuguese will be considered. Should the number of articles (which were sent to the DOSSIER section and received an approval rating) exceed the space available for publications, those remaining will be considered for the ESPACIO ABIERTO section of the next number.

Both those articles destined to the DOSSIER and ESPACIO ABIERTO sections must have an attached summary of the article in their respective original language and in English, specifying the objectives, methodology and main conclusions, with a maximum of 300 (three hundred) words. They should also come accompanied with 3 or 6 keywords (in the original and English language). The use of the CLACSO Thesaurus is suggested for the identification of those keywords (http://biblioteca.clacso.edu.ar/archivos_web_adj/143.pdf). The article’s title must be provided in the original and English language.

All the articles must come accompanied by a brief C.V. (with a maximum length of 10 lines) of the author, indicating education, institution, publications, e-mail address and any other piece of information deemed relevant.

Article submission must be made online, via the QUID 16 platform: http://publicaciones.sociales.uba.ar/index.php/quid16/user/register. Unless being able to login to an already existing account, registration is required in order to submit articles and to check the status of those already sent, by following the corresponding steps and loading the required information and metadata.

About the preparation of manuscripts

- The manuscript must be original, not published or taken into consideration by any other journal and be the result of an investigation in adherence to the ethical norms of scientific production.

- The manuscripts destined to the DOSSIER and ESPACIO ABIERTO sections will submit to a process of peer review under the double blind testing method. They will be approved on the basis of quality and clarity of exposition, as well as scientific novelty and adherence to the theme.

- In order to ensure the anonymous quality of the review process, the author must pay strong attention at erasing any reference that could be used to identify him. For this reason, the article must be accompanied with a separate page which contains: article title in the original and English language, name of the author, e-mail address, highest degree awarded, position, place of work or institution affiliation and postal address.

- The manuscripts must be delivered in Word format, Cambria type, 12 pts. Font size, single-spaced, single column and in A4 paper format.

- Avoid the use of indentation, paragraph spacing must be set to 6pts, both anterior and posterior, and single-spaced.

- Avoid the use of tables in the text.

- The text must be written in black letter color. Respect upper and lower case and do not write exclusively in upper case, unless it is expressly indicated in the Bibliography.

- In case the need to highlight a piece of text arises, do so in italics or in bold, with the exception of the instructions expressed below.

- The title of the article must be centered and in the original and English languages.

- Subtitles will appear typed in the left margin (upper and lower case), in bold and font size 12. Both primary and secondary subtitles will be typed in the left margin, in italics, font size 11.

- DOSSIER and ESPACIO ABIERTO articles must come accompanied by a summary in both the original and English language, with a maximum extension of 300 (three hundred) words.

- Those summaries must be accompanied by between 3 and 6 keywords (in the original and English languages). The use of the CLACSO Thesaurus is suggested for the identification of those keywords (http://biblioteca.clacso.edu.ar/archivos_web_adj/143.pdf

- Article titles must be written in the original and English languages.

- Quotations: Both for verbatim and paraphrasing, the sixth version of the American Psychological Association (APA) system will be used. In the main body of the text, quotations will be indicated by using the author’s name and the year, for example (Garcia, 2012); in case of verbatim quotations the page number will be added (Garcia, 2012:33). In case the quotation belongs to a text coauthored by more than three persons, use the following format: First author’s last name, followed by et.al, date and page number, for example: Garcia, et al., 2012:33. If verbatim quotations should exceed four lines, they will be separated by a space (pressing the Enter key) and written in font size 11, italics, simple spacing with no inverted commas and an indentation at both ends of 1 pt.

- Notes must be included at the bottom of the page and numbered in correlation, using a 10 font size, simple spacing with no indentation.

- In case of lists, avoid using the “list” or “bullet points” function from Word, and add a dash, letter or number manually instead.

- Pictures, illustrations, charts, graphics and tables must come numbered in a correlated sequence, including a full title with location and date and a complete reference to the respective source, using a font size 11.

Pictures, illustrations and logos, etc., must be incorporated into the text using an 18 cm wide size and 300 dpi resolution, and/or be sent separately in their real size converted into curves and with a 300 dpi resolution, always keeping the reference to the location suggested by the author, for example: Photograph 1 – Location. The respective filename must coincide with the photograph number provided.

Graphs, charts and tables must be incorporated into the text, besides the recommendation of sending them separately in an Excel format, indicating their proper location in the text, for example: Table 1 – Location. The filename must coincide with the number provided for the corresponding element.

It is the author’s responsibility to manage all the corresponding permits for the publication of images that should require one, and to provide those to the journal afterwards.

- When using acronyms, those must be accompanied by their full meaning, and then the respective acronym should be used. For example: Secretaría Latinoamericana de Vivienda Popular (SeLVIP).

- Bibliographic References: According to the APA referencing system, those listed should only contain the sources which substantiate the corresponding work and have been quoted in the text. A full reference will be included at the end of the document, in alphabetical order, and for each author, a chronological order will be used, counting from the oldest to the most recent one. Some of the most common guidelines for reference structuring will be included below. We recommend due care regarding the use of upper, lower case and punctuation. The use of bibliographic managers like Zotero, Microsoft Word references and Mendeley’s among others, is suggested.

- In order to be sent, the archive must be named as follows: Last name of the author(s), followed by a lower dash and the name of the corresponding section.

Intellectual property: QUID 16 is a journal which belongs to the Urban Studies Area of the Gino Germani Institute, a body of the University of Buenos Aires Social Sciences Faculty. When an author sends an article for its evaluation, this implies the transfer of copyright to the journal, with an aim towards publication.

The admittance of contributions by the journal implies the assignment of ownership rights from the author in favor of the editor, who will allow its reutilization, after being edited under the Non-Commercial Creative Commons 3.0 License. Such license states that it is possible to copy, to communicate or publicly distribute the content as long as proper quotation of the individual authors and the publication name is provided, as well as the corresponding publishing institution.

The assignment of non-exclusive rights also implies that the authors allow the allocation of their work within an institutional repository owned by the Social Sciences Faculty of the University of Buenos Aires (UBA), which is also distributed through all the databases that the editor deems appropriate for its indexation, aiming towards increased visibility of both the journal and its authors.
