Rio's suburbs. Ambiguities and disputes in the early 20th century

This article starts with the current perception that the suburbs of Rio de Janeiro are a region marked by lack and precariousness to understand how this representation was formed. Focusing on the early years of the 20th century, based on testimonies from different press organizations, the text seeks to denaturalize the association between Rio’s suburbs and poverty, revealing the processes that led to the consolidation of this idea. Based on this specific case, this study aims to suggest analytical paths for broader reflections on the processes of social stratification of space in Rio de Janeiro, highlighting the importance of the material and symbolic dimensions that permeate this phenomenon.Downloads
