Ways of living in the popular settlements of the northern coast of Uruguay. The case of the department of Salto

The purpose of this article is to understand the ways of living that are developed in two emblematic slums in the city of Salto (Uruguay), reflected in their historical evolution, as well as in the living conditions of its inhabitants. For this, the article consider the inputs generated in different works about the access to housing and slums in Uruguay and, in particular, in the northern coastal zone of the country, as well as others related to the intervention of the State in their approach. From an ethnographic study, some appreciations are recovered regarding the process of occupation and appropriation of the space generated by its inhabitants, as well as the points of tension that emerge in its production.Downloads
