Class self-identifications, political implications and housing access in Villa Argentina

This article explores the modes of political involvement that coexist in the process of self-identification as “middle class” among the inhabitants of Villa Argentina, a “garden neighborhood” built in the early 20th century by Cervecería y Maltería Quilmes (CMQ) to house its staff. Currently, as a result of the global concentration of capital and urban transformations, Villa Argentina is undergoing a strong and accelerated process of change. After being declared Historical Heritage, in 2012, by the Honorable Deliberative Council of the City of Quilmes, the multinational company that acquired CMQ put all the properties that comprise it up for sale, four years later. Those residents who became owners of the houses that they had rented for decades from the company were confronted with the closing of a long cycle, marked by the end of a business management mode (associated with “Bemberg time”) and the beginning of a new relationship with the state, marked by the patrimonial status of the neighborhood. Appealing to three terms (freedom, responsibility and balance) present in the public conversation, we explored the class self-identifications and political implications expressed by Romina, Claudia, and Rodolfo, residents of Villa Argentina. From the description of their trajectories and different ethnographic scenes, the article reviews the decoupling between the alleged improvements in their living conditions and the subjective experiences linked to them; it analyzes the politicization of discomfort that this entails as a point of intersection between an analysis of the social structure and the immediate experiences of the people involved.Downloads
