Abstract

Based on theoretical approaches that problematize the meanings of consumption, and in particular of food consumption, as well as on studies that identify different types of politized consumption, this article analyses the results of a study on consumers of a marketing cooperative located in the city of Buenos Aires, which emphasizes the inclusion of family farming and the support for alternative ways of consumption to the hegemonic ones embodied in the big food industry and supermarket chains. Based on a survey and interviews carried out in two stores of the cooperative, the perspectives and the behaviours of consumers are analyzed, highlighting central issues linked to their priorities when buying food, the references to which they appeal in their processes of delegation of trust, their degree of commitment to alternative marketing circuits,  as well as their knowledge of the systemic aspects of the agri-food system. It is concluded that daily food practices reveal compromises between different forces that struggle to impose themselves, not only those related to the influence of the materialities of the conventional food supply system, but also those linked to the conditions in which productive and reproductive work are carried out.
