Las narrativas del neoliberalismo en el relato de las series: Billions y The Walking Dead

Resumen

Qué descripción del neoliberalismo podemos encontrar en los relatos de series como Billions (2016-) y The Walking Dead (2010-)? ¿Qué procedimientos metodológicos podemos utilizar para el análisis de los relatos? Por último ¿cómo encarnan estas series el relato y narrativas del neoliberalismo? Estos son los interrogantes que aborda este texto.

El objetivo de este trabajo es observar las narrativas del neoliberalismo en los relatos de las series Billions y The Walking Dead. Entendemos las narrativas como una forma de la legitimación de los saberes científicos como populares. Proponemos un análisis estructural del relato desde la narratología de Greimas y Genette para identificar las narrativas del neoliberalismo en estos relatos.

Hay dos narrativas del neoliberalismo que encontramos en estas series. Billions encarna el relato utópico del neoliberalismo donde el mercado es un mecanismo de libertad y justicia y el Estado es un parásito del capitalista que genera la verdadera riqueza. The Walking Dead muestra otro aspecto del neoliberalismo relacionado con la desposesión y la lucha por la supervivencia. En estas series podemos apreciar estas una narrativa apocalíptica y una integrada sobre el neoliberalismo.

La conclusión es que las series son una fuente para observar como circula el discurso del neoliberalismo en la cultura popular y configuran las maneras de entender el mundo.

Narratives of neoliberalism in TV series: Billions and The walking dead

Abstract

Which description of neoliberalism can we find in the stories of shows as Billions (2016-) and The Walking Dead (2010-)? What methodological procedures can we use to analyze this stories? Finally, how do these stories embody the narratives of neoliberalism? These are the questions that here we addresses. The objective of this work is to explore the narratives of neoliberalism in the stories of the Billions and The Walking Dead series. We understand narratives as a way of legitimizing scientific and popular knowledge. This approach uses the structural analysis of the narratology of Greimas and Genette to identify the narratives of neoliberalism in these stories. There are two narratives of neoliberalism that we find in these series. Billions embodies the utopian account of neoliberalism where the market is a mechanism of freedom and justice and the State is a parasite of the capitalist that generates true wealth. The Walking Dead shows another aspect of neoliberalism related to dispossession and the struggle for survival. In these series we can appreciate these apocalyptic narrative and an integrated one on neoliberalism. The conclusion is that the series are a source to observe how the discourse of neoliberalism circulates in popular culture and shape the way of understanding the world.
