Notas sobre la sociología de Thorstein Veblen y algunas aristas de su relación con el conflicto social, la guerra y la paz.

Resumen

El sociólogo norteamericano Thorstein Bunde Veblen (1857-1929) no es muy conocido entre los sociólogos de habla hispana, y nunca tuvo un fácil reconocimiento dentro del mundo académico. Su pensamiento es difícil de clasificar, pero se encuentra cercano a ciertas ideas socialistas, aunque muy alejado de Marx. Respecto de su vínculo con la sociología, pueden rastrearse su particular influencia y prestigio en la construcción de varios observables para la disciplina que lo asocian ineludiblemente con el industrialismo y con la ponderación del impacto tecnológico y de las instituciones en el desarrollo social. Algunas lecturas más actualizadas de su obra lo han emparentado directa o indirectamente con temáticas tan disímiles y dispares como el turismo, la publicidad, los juegos de azar y las apuestas, la moda, el arte, el consumo, el esnobismo, la religión, el marketing, el ocio, el deporte, el feminismo, la indumentaria y la cultura. En este artículo procuraré exponer sus consideraciones y aportes respecto a la problemática del conflicto social, la guerra y la paz a partir de un supuesto fundante de su teoría: la actividad guerrera, el militarismo, el armamentismo, la conquista militar, la lucha, son todos factores fundamentales a la hora de explicar la evolución social.

Notes on the sociology of Thorstein Veblen and some considerations on its relation to war and peace.

The north american sociologist Thorstein Bunde Veblen (1857 – 1929) is not well known among spanish-speaking sociologists, and academic recognition didn’t come easy for him. His thought is hard to classify, but is close to certain socialist ideas, though very far from Marx. Regarding his link to sociology, his particular influence and prestige can be traced. in the construction of several observables for the discipline that inevitably associated him to industrialism and the weighting of impact of technological and institutions in social development . Some most current lectures of his work have directly or indirectly related him to topics as diverse as tourism, advertising, gaming and gambling, fashion, art, consumption, snobbery, religion, marketing, leisure, sports, feminism, clothing and culture. In this article I will attempt to expose its considerations and contributions regarding the problem of social conflict, war and peace, from a foundational assumption of his theory: the warrior, militarism activity, the arms race, military conquest, struggle, are all fundamental factors to explaining social evolution.
