Resumen

Estados Unidos se forjó como un país de inmigrantes que poblaron su extenso territorio en el siglo XIX, atraídos por el sueño de transformarse en farmers. En los últimos años, con la llegada de millones de migrantes de origen hispano, se está produciendo un cambio demográfico significativo. Como reacción, se erige un muro en la porosa frontera con México, crecen las deportaciones y resurge un discurso racista y xenófobo, llevado al paroxismo por el presidente electo Donald Trump. Sectores conservadores resisten la aprobación de una reforma migratoria que otorgue cobertura a millones de habitantes que son superexplotados por vivir en la ilegalidad. Los controles fronterizos y los derechos de los inmigrantes indocumentados se volvieron uno de los temas centrales de la campaña presidencial de este año, frente a demandas económicas y sociales insatisfechas y a un discurso securitario que se refuerza ante cada ataque terrorista.

The United States was forged as a country of immigrants who came to its vast territory in the Nineteenth Century, following the American dream. In recent years, with the advancement of Hispanic immigration, a significant demographic change is happening. In reaction, a wall is erected in the fragile border with Mexico and a racist and xenophobic discourse is reappearing, taken to paroxysm by president elected Donald Trump. Conservatives resist the passage of an immigration reform that gives coverage to millions of people who are super-exploited by living in illegality. Border controls and the rights of undocumented immigrants are now one of the central issues of the 2016 presidential campaign, because there are economic and social unsatisfied demands and a security discussion, which is reinforced at every terrorist attack.
