Narratives about the first international broadcasted matches of Brazilian team

Abstract

This paper investigate press metadiscourses about the first soccer matches broadcasted by radio, presented as “real time” reports. We took as case study the 1937’ South American Championship finales, between Brazil and Argentina, referred to in two of the most important Brazilian newspapers at that time: A Noite and Diário Carioca. We seek to understand the process that converted sports narration into a popular mobiliser, supporting the building of a collective imaginary about the national team, as well as a rivalry with the Argentinians and the audio broadcasting media itself.
