Volver a las cosas mismas. Estrategias fenomenológicas en la obra de Michel Foucault

Resumen

El artículo rastrea diversos vínculos entre la producción intelectual de Michel Foucault y la tradición fenomenológica. La intención no es desarrollar una comparación estricta entre métodos sino rastrear los hilos que unen a las investigaciones de Foucault y la hermenéutica en su intento de comprender lo social mediante una concepción no dualista de la relación sujeto/objeto e historia/subjetividad. Este rastreo puede aportar a una crítica de la concepción de la obra foucaultiana como estructuralista, posmoderna o relativista, y habilitar una concepción más amplia de su teoría del sujeto. Para ello, nos detendremos en su definición de “intelectual específico” y su relación con la reducción fenomenológica. Luego, estableceremos relaciones entre “estrategia genealógica” en Foucault y Husserl, señalando que la oposición de Foucault al estructuralismo y al existencialismo dependen de nociones como práctica social y vida cotidiana, acuñadas por la tradición hermenéutica. Asimismo, mantendremos que la idea de una preexistencia intersubjetiva del sentido es crucial para la crítica foucaultiana del esencialismo humanista. Por último, rastrearemos la noción esquiva de “realidad” en Foucault y su relación con el precepto husserliano de “volver a las cosas mismas” en su crítica a la concepción teleológica de la historia.

Back to the things themselves. Phenomenological strategies in Michel Foucault’s work.

Abstract

The article traces elements that link Michel Foucault's intellectual production with the phenomenological tradition. The intention is not to develop a strict comparison between methodologies, but to trace the threads linking Foucault's work and hermeneutics in their common goal to understand social nature in a non-dualistic way. This type of tracking can contribute to a critique of the common conception of Foucault's work as structuralist, postmodern or relativistic, and in turn enable a more depth understanding of his theory of the subject. Therefore, we will dwell on his definition of the "specific intellectual" and its relation to the phenomenological reduction. Then, we will give an account of the link between Foucault and Husserl's genealogical strategy, and we will point out that Foucault's opposition to structuralism and existentialism depend, to a large extent, on notions of social practice and daily life coined by the hermeneutic tradition. We will maintain that Foucault defends the idea of an intersubjective pre-existence of meaning to criticize the essentialist tradition of humanism. Finally, we will trace Foucault's elusive notion of "reality" and its relations to the Husserlian precept to "return to the things themselves", as support for his critique of the teleological conception of history.
