Deshaciendo el dominio del imperio sobre la democracia occidental: una vía antiimperialista para salir de la crisis actual

Resumen


El ascenso del populismo en las democracias occidentales tiene mucho que ver con el desmoronamiento del acuerdo imperial – es una demanda encubierta por restituirlo. Las democracias ricas se basaron en una alianza entre el capital y los trabajadores en favor de una prosperidad creciente, lograda a través de la subyugación imperialista de pueblos colonizados. El orden postcolonial no ha eliminado la adicción de las democracias occidentales al imperialismo – solo ha creado nuevas formas de subyugación, extracción y explotación. El ascenso contemporáneo del populismo racista es una queja contra el desmoronamiento del orden postcolonial y el pacto distributivo que los pueblos occidentales obtuvieron por medio del capitalismo globalizado. Si un mundo verdaderamente democrático ha de emerger de la caída del neoliberalismo, las sociedades occidentales deben purgar sus hábitos imperialistas, profundamente asentados, y confrontar al capitalismo doméstico y global.
