Abstract

Big data and Data mining are presented from a critical perspective that characterizes them as a social configuration marked by the availability of large volumes of data –especially digital– and techniques tending to their exploration. Then, a case of data exploration on 40,000 Facebook comments about news dealing with the disappearance of Santiago Maldonado is presented, where in addition to reporting the results, the steps followed in both data extraction, preprocessing and the analysis. Finally, its relevance and meaning for the social and psychosocial sciences is evaluated through a discussion of its myths, and its methodological potential is argued, insofar as they can be integrated into research programs, such as social representations
