Dissonance in the Collective Memory of the Malvinas War: A Comparative Study of the Structural Approach in Civilian and Military Populations

This descriptive and cross-sectional study aims to analyze the Social Representations (SR) and Collective Memory (CM) of the Malvinas War in two groups: a civilian population (n = 243; M = 41.82; SD = 13.67) and military students (n = 252; M = 23.34; SD = 2.55). Using a hierarchical evocation test, the structures of the central and peripheral nuclei for each group were identified. The results reveal a marked dissonance: the civilian population presents a depersonalized representation, focused on political criticisms such as "injustice," "dictatorship," and "unnecessary." In contrast, the military members exhibit a strong nationalist tone, where the central core is composed of evocations such as "patriotism," "heroism," and the specific figure of Lieutenant Roberto Estévez. Regarding the emotional dimension, statistically significant differences were found: civilians report higher negative emotionality associated with pain and political criticism, while military members show a positive emotionality linked to honor and sacrifice. The analysis of associated figures reinforces this gap; civilians mention generic figures or political leaders (Galtieri, Thatcher), whereas the military highlights specific combat heroes. These findings validate that collective memory is a symbolic construction that serves to maintain group identity and provide a framework of value references in the present.Referencias
