Abstract

This qualitative study explored perceptions of late diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in Chilean women. The results revealed significant gender disparities in the diagnosis of Autism, with a higher incidence of misdiagnosis in women. This study underscores the critical need to implement early and inclusive diagnostic practices. Participants reported a remarkable shift from self-criticism to self-pity after diagnosis, highlighting the importance of culturally sensitive assessments and gender-sensitive diagnostic criteria. It concludes with the need for specialized training for health professionals and policy adjustments to ensure timely and accurate diagnoses, thus improving the quality of life and emotional well-being. The data analysis yielded six main categories and sixteen subcategories, providing a solid framework for understanding the complexities of late diagnosis in this population.
